A screen of SNPs in the RXRA gene in 405 Alzheimer's disease patients (mean age 74 +/- 9 years) suggests that the rs3132293(G) allele (in dbSNP orientation) is associated with lower risk for the disease.[PMID 18544046]

However, it should be noted that (1) this allele is quite common, (2) there was a significant difference in the % of females (79%) in the patient population compared to the control population (57%), and (3) the magnitude of associated changes in cerebral cholesterol is not high.
