10.1038/ng.3620 A thrifty variant in CREBRF strongly influences body mass index in Samoans (rs12513649 and rs373863828). The key finding is that rs373863828(A) is associated with a 35 per cent higher chance of obesity (i.e. odds ratio of 1.35), and this rare variant is far more common among Samoans than Africans, Europeans or East Asians.

However, since the frequency of this variant in Samoans is unlikely to have changed dramatically over the last 200 years, whereas the obesity rare in this population has increased dramatically, the variant on it's own is considered insufficient to lead to obesity. Instead, the change in diet and in other environmental factors (less exercise, for example) is likely to act in synergy with this variant to lead to increased risk for obesity.
